The fourth film in the Kindaichi Kosuke series by Chiezo Kataoka, released in theaters in 1954, based on the 1951 novel of the same title by Seishi Yokomizo. --The story begins when Kosuke Kindaichi is visited by Miyako, the daughter of Eisuke Tsubaki, a former viscount who committed suicide after being proven innocent as a suspect in the highly publicized mass poisoning of Tengindo. Miyako's request is to confirm whether her father Eisuke is alive or dead, as her mother Akiko is horrified by the sight of Eisuke, who is supposed to be dead. Eisuke's suicide note contains the eerie words, "The devil is coming and blowing his whistle.... At Miyako's invitation, Kindaichi and his assistant, Shizuko Shiraki, attend a sand fortune-telling gathering of Akiko's doctor, Dr. Mega, at the Tsubaki residence.
